Green Google

The ‘G’ in Google has become synonymous with green. In an effort to combat global warming, Google is introducing a new and free (as always) software that hopes to cut down energy wastage in households. It will enlighten consumers with real-time data on their energy consumption and costs, say, daily or even hourly. Consumers can avail of the Google Power Meter in their iGoogle homepages later this year. Eventually, consumers could get comparative counts of power usage per appliance or per room and, hopefully, take active measures to cut wasting energy and money. As with the Android, Google would open up the application to outside developers, thus creating infinite possibilities for innovation.

There’s more from Google. This time it is aimed at the crazy lot that laps up every cell phone that hits the market. With the joy of switching phones comes the added headache of uploading contacts yet again. Google is working on a programme that synchronizes and automatically uploads your Gmail contacts and Google Calendar events on to your device. The catch is that you have to be either an iPhone or a Windows Mobile user.
